The Great Coral Grief: David Attenborough, a well-known naturalist, introduce us to our modern day â€Å"Darwin,† J.E.N. Veron, a former chief scientist whom is the world’s greatest scientific authorities on corals and coral reefs. Veron who has lived and worked on the Great Barrier Reef for most his life has discovered over 20 percent of the known coral species today. And today, he gives us an insight on why the earth’s reefs face a likely mass extinction within the lifespan of the younger generation. During his time as a scientist, he researched particularly on the diversity and evolution of the world’s corals and became aware of their troubles. He then began his studies on the analyses of previous reef extinctions and accrued more evidence of the effects of changing sea levels, temperature stresses, predation by crown of thorns starfish, and human influenced changes in nutrient levels. Veron had witnessed his first patch of coral bleaching off the Great Barrier Reef’s Palm Island in the early 1980s, a tiny clump of white skeleton. Everything started turning white and dies, it was the fast-growing branching corals, but some of the others were horrible to see. After witnessing the mass bleaching, the global damage confirmed a close connection with El Nino weather cycles. When I got to the CD players, I checked to see if anyone was around, no one was, so I just put it in my coat. I was so calm as I reached for the door handle but just at that seconded a hand reached out and grabbed my arm, id been caught.’ The police were called and as it was James’s first offence he got away with a strong warning. The next time the group met Martin was pleased. ‘James well done for your efforts and the way you handled the police. I have a task for you’ Martin beamed at James. James knew it was a bad idea but was too afraid to argue. The next night James met Martin. ‘You’ve proved yourself as a good friend James.’ Martin started walking down the street. ‘I had no idea what to do, so I just followed Martin. Bad choice.’ The next ten minutes were all a blur to James. ‘The next thing I knew I was sitting in a car, driving really fast. I started to shout at Martin to let me out.’ ‘What’s gotten into you Henderson, you were all for it a minute ago.’ Martin screamed. ‘Just let me out!’ I screamed back. The judge was harsh. The Malayan delegation, comprising of four representatives of the Malay Rulers and four Alliance representatives, convinced the British Government to set a date for independence: 31st August 1957. And so it came to pass that on the eve of 31 August 1957, at the Selangor Club Padang (now known as Dataran Merdeka or Independence Square), the Malayan flag was hoisted to replace the Union Jack. Early the next morning the Tunku read the Proclamation of Independence at the historic Merdeka Stadium. On both occasions, Tunkus shouts of Merdeka! were joyously echoed by thousands of Malayans who were there, and the millions who followed the proceedings through the mass media. Malaya had officially gained independence from the former colonialists and became known as the Federation of Malaya, to be followed in 1963 by a change in name to the Federation of Malaysia. And every year since that momentous event in 1957, Malaysians of all races proudly celebrate the anniversary of their independence. Malaysia has come along way since then. After almost half a century of progress, development and improvement, the country has become a role model for other developing countries, and shown that people of different cultures and religions can live and work together while maintaining their unique identities and their own traditions and customs. On a special occasions like Merdeka Day, the many races of Malaysia proudly don their traditional costumes and gather at various venues around the country in celebration of freedom, self-determination and unity. Malaysia will celebrate her 49th Independence Day on 31 August 2006. The centre for National Day celebrations rotates around the states of Malaysia. Take for example last year, the main event will be held in Putrajaya. Festivities would start the night before with an open-air concert at the chosen venue during the Merdeka Eve Celebrations with popular Malaysian singers and celebrities. To mark the occasion on the morning of Merdeka Day, the main event usually begins with a spectacular parade down at the reselected venue with His Majesty The King, the Prime Minister, and other government leaders joining the mammoth crowd. Lady Macbeth becomes more scornful as what Macbeth has told her and tells him that, â€Å"when you durst do it, then you were a man†. At the moment Lady Macbeth affirms the ideal chance to kill the king, but Macbeth is backing out making him not a man to commit this murder. Then after mocking Macbeth’s manhood and manipulating him to kill Duncan, Lady Macbeth affirms that she’s more man than he is.
